The First 60 Days
As the first Account Manager here at Usman Group, I wanted to give everyone a glimpse into my first couple of months after joining the team.
Let’s take it back to the very first day.
(Insert rewind sound effect here)
Everyone knows that feeling from childhood when you’re starting your first day at a new school. That mixed feeling of anxiousness and excitement; you’re worried if the new school is going to be a good fit, but also excited for a fresh start. Well, I’ve learned that no matter how old you get that feeling never quite goes away.
This time, however, the nerves were put at ease due to a half day session during my interview process where I had the opportunity to get to know the entire team and learn more about what my position entailed. The fact that the whole team, not just management, was involved in this half day session really spoke to Usman Group’s quality of being team oriented. The time I spent with the team was very helpful in sealing the deal on both ends and figuring out that we would be a good fit.
On my official first day, I was ready to hit the ground running, and so was the UG team, so much so that I was scheduled for a client meeting that same day. Having a client meeting on your first day is not typical, but doing so was extremely beneficial for two reasons: 1) I was able to develop a client connection right off the bat 2) I had the opportunity to process everything by experiencing it rather than just hearing about it.
Since then, what was new is now familiar. What I’ve really come to appreciate during these past months is the collaborative effort from my team. When our creative director, for example, is brainstorming for a wireframe, he sketches it out on the whiteboard, and then asks for everyone’s input in order to arrive at the most effective solution. To me, this is the truest form of teamwork: working together to get the best results.
Also, after working with our clients, I am pleasantly surprised at how enthusiastic and invested they are in getting involved in the entire process. They have all been fully engrossed in full day discovery meetings and review sessions, and seem like they are genuinely having fun collaborating with Usman Group. This speaks to not only the caliber of clients we work with, but also UG’s ability to keep our clients happy and interested in the work we do for them.
Overall, I’m very proud to be able to work with the individuals that I do today, including our furry friends (shout out to Charles and Rico!). My ultimate goals are to apply my skills and grow with the company, while I continue to connect and collaborate with clients to develop something for which we are both proud. As part of the future of UG, I plan for there to be a bevy of Account Managers, who will one day narrate their own first day experience, but until then I hope you’ve enjoyed mine.
